Gov’t pays off UWI fees, talks planned for new fee structure

Legislators have green-lighted the payment of $2.4M in fees owed to the University of the West Indies.
Education Minister Hon. Juliana O’Connor Connolly told MLAs last week that back from 2004-2005 consecutive governments were delinquent in paying the fees.
The government had committed to pay 80 percent of the fees for students at UWI.

The other 20 percent was paid by the student, but that Government commitment was never fulfilled, prompting a UWI membership levy.
“There was a meeting back on the first of this month with various government heads and we sent the Attorney General and Phillip from our Ministry to negotiate the way forward with the other governments and we are attempting now to clear off this embarrassment,” Minister O’Connor-Connolly told the LA.

The minister said a new meeting has been scheduled for March 2019.

She said a new percentage payment formula will also have to be worked out.
