The Mosquito Research and Control Unit and Oxitec have discontinued the release of genetically modified mosquitoes, also called Mozzies, in West Bay.
That’s according to a Government Information Services statement over the weekend.
It said the project has now entered the monitoring and assessment phase.
The release said the mosquito population numbers have remained unexpectedly low this season.
The project has cost the government $588, 000.
A further, no-cost collaboration between the MRCU and Oxitec is under consideration for 2019, the release added.
The release said Oxitec is still employing local personnel to help with the continuing research responsibilities that it maintains under its current agreement.
