Cayman escapes Rio Athletes Village problems

Cayman’s contingent at the Rio 2016 Olympics appears to have escaped the trouble being reported from others in the Athletes Village, according to a Cayman Islands Olympic Committee spokesperson.

It has been widely reported those staying in the area have condemned the accommodations as unsafe or uninhabitable due to plumbing, electrical and other issues. Team Australia went so far as to house its members in a hotel until improvements were made.

Cayman Islands Olympic Committee President Donald McLean says out of Cayman’s eight rooms, one had a flood.

CIOC’s Jennifer Powell, the Chef de Mission for this trip, wrote an email from Rio de Janeiro reading no one from Cayman has had any issues with the venues or facilities.

“Any issues that these teams faced in the early stages of the opening of the village are all being addressed in an extremely timely manner,” Powell wrote.
“We expect any remaining, minor issues to be resolved in the next couple of days and we’ve had a great experience.”
